What Are Scleral Lenses?
For some patients, scleral lenses are an excellent alternative to traditional contact lenses. Scleral lenses are a type of rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses that are specially designed to cover your entire cornea and rest on the sclera, the “white” of the eye. Because scleral lenses don’t rest directly on your corneas, they’re comfortable, breathable, and more stable on the eye, providing sharper vision correction for some patients.
Scleral lenses functionally replace an irregularly shaped cornea and feature a dome shape which can correct corneal irregularities, such as keratoconus. The area between the back surface of the lens and the cornea also acts as a reservoir for tears and eye fluid, which can help relieve dry eye symptoms.

Could You Benefit from Scleral Lenses?
If you’re unable to wear contact lenses due to an irregular cornea or discomfort, then likely yes! Scleral lenses are also great for patients with the following conditions:
- Chronic dry eye
- Irregular astigmatism
- Severe ocular surface disease
- Eyes that require RGP lenses for comfort
