Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) provides extremely high-quality, micrometre resolution 3D images of cross-sections of biological tissue. In the following images, the different colours represent the different retinal layers. The left-hand image shows a healthy eye, with a dip at the center of the macula. In the right-hand image the retina is thickened-swollen by fluid wich should not be there.

The OCT also reviews the optic nerve. In the photograph below it shows a healthy optic nerve compared to a glaucoma suspect.
